Acre is what Jaffa used to be before Tel Aviv arrived. Old walls, an Ottoman souk still doing business, a working fishing harbour where the boats come in at 5am and the fish is on your plate by lunch. Come for a day, stay two.
The main attractions
Start at the Hospitallers' Fortress underground — Crusader halls the size of cathedrals, discovered by accident in the 1990s. Then the Templar tunnel, then the Turkish bathhouse (skip the audio guide, walk it in silence). Finish on the sea wall as the fishermen come back in.
Come hungry
Uri Buri is the argument — chef Uri Jeremias' sea-food institution, tasting-menu only, book weeks ahead. For lunch: Doniana on the harbour, whole grilled fish, table linen included. And Humus Said in the souk, opens 5am, closes when the last pita is gone.
